About Our Founder

Amirah’s Voice was founded by the Executive Director and Human Rights Activist Fortunate Adem after discovering her daughter’s rights as a defenseless child, as a woman and as a human being were violated. This non-profit organization was built on the blood shedding and the pain and agony experienced by Fortunate Adems child. Amirah means princess in Arabic and this organization is especially developed by the founder to give back the voices to those women and children who have been violently detained by oppression. Driven by the innocence of her daughter Fortunate adem along with State Representative Mary Margaret Oliver and the Georgia legislatures lobbied and passed an anti-FGM law in 2005, making Georgia the 17th state in America. While Fortunate Adem has been voicing her concerns to the government and the community much work has been done to bring awareness to the growing and unspeakable crime of Female genital mutilation in the United States. In 2004 Fortunate Adem pioneered the very first Female Genital Mutilation case in the history of the United States of America. Her ex-husband Khalid Adem became the first person in the history of the United States to be convicted of female genital mutilation on November 01, 2006. Khalid Adem was sentenced to 10 years in prison and 5years probation. This conviction runs as the longest time given in the World for someone who has performed female genital mutilation on a little girl. Amirah’s Voice was the only human rights organization that attended the trial for the entire 10 days. Amirah’s Voice contributed to the guilty conviction against Khalid Adem by testifying in the trial as an expert witness. Fortunate Adem has vision this human’s rights organization to be the help for women and children in America and around the world to create awareness and to break free from oppressing atrocities like female genital mutilation and other forms of sexual abuse. Amirah’s voice is a grassroots organization that continues to strive in voicing out the need to combat the injustice placed on women and children worldwide. Today Fortunate Adem continues to educate the public as a guest speaker in many Professional Health Seminars and Educational Seminars, As a guest speaker in many classroom settings and especially to Health students. Ms. Adem continues to create awareness by sharing her story to many that do not know that female genital mutilation exists.
