Slain Ga. Mom, Kids sought asylum from Kenya

Details of Kenyans' deaths kept quiet; investigation will look at "victims' culture and their ties overseas." ane Kuria fled her native Kenya in 2001 because she feared her daughters would have to undergo female circumcision, her lawyer said Thursday."Her fear was of the horrific practice of female genital mutilation and it happening to her daughters," said Charles H. Kuck, an Atlanta immigration attorney. She had applied for asylum in the United States, but recently was denied. Kuck was handling her appeal. Hearings for her two daughters' asylum cases were scheduled for Aug. 29.


Mutilated Girls; U.K.'s Ignored Secret

Twenty-seven females in the London borough of Harringey have sought medical treatment after being sexually mutilated. Down the road in Waltham Forest, more than a thousand women, girls and infants have experienced female genital mutilation or FGM.

The group Forward campaigns against the practice and estimates there could be as many as 66,000 women now living in Britain who've suffered this — either in one of the 28 African countries where it is still practiced, or here in Britain. It's especially popular in the growing Somali community.
